U12 Game 1 - U12's vs. the host team Burnaby. The U12's played solid hockey through all three periods, but with only 10 skaters for the tournament, the girls were just not able to come back and even the score, losing 3-1. Emily Grahn picked up the rebound off defenseman Meghan Kraus' shot to get the Selects only goal of the game. Game MVP went to Ellen Kroll who played solid defense all game.
U12 Game 2 - The 12's battled North Shore Winter Club and the game was even for much of the game. Again fatigue was an issue as the bigger NSWC wore our girls down. Meghan Kraus put the selects on the board with an assist from Cailey Scott, but it wasn't enough with our girls losing 3-1.
U12 Game 3 - The young 12's start to come together as a team and pick up a win! The 12's battled with all their mite after falling behind to Sooke in the first period. A break away goal from Mo Greason got the game rolling and the 12's didn't look back. Cailey Scott was all over the ice working hard for the team. Courtney Severson and Meghan added two more to the score board before ending the game with a 3-2 win, solidly in 4th place and able to move on to the play off round. Keighlee Riggan was solid between the pipes. Cailey Scott and Meghan Kraus pick up MVP's for the game
U12 Game 4 - NW Selects U12 hung in game 4 for the first period and a half against a 17 man Meadowridge bench... battling for every puck. Lindsey Courtney and Katie OConner were tough on the forecheck and Audra Triner solid again on defense. They continued working hard through the entire game and never gave up. They came up short, but, throughout the tournament coaches Kim and Candace were really proud of the 12's and look forward to the next tournament with this young team. They lost to Meadowridge but still picked up 4th in the tournament! Sarah Kroll picked up the MVP for the game
U14 Game 1 - Today a mighty battle was waged inside the Burnaby 8 rinks on the Gold B ice.
The Northwest Selects 14U Team won an impressive game 4-0.
The contest was an extremely close, and unbelievably physical game.
Coach AJ and Coach Kari were very happy with the way the team played more and more like a cohesive unit as the game went on.
Emily Ellis led the way with two goals, while Saville Pickar and Miranda Buck also tallied.
The action was back and forth with both teams having lots of good scoring chances. Both goalies played extremely well, and Kaelyn Green, the goalie for the Selects, won the MVP award for the game.
Jordan Hymer, Naomi Woolfenden, Audrey Quirk, and Savannah Sales were exceptional on defense as they stymied the Tri City Predators time and time again.
Carli Wilson, Jerin Dinkins, Julie Brubacher, and Lizzie Jossie all provided relentless pressure on the Predators goalie and kept the game "moving forward."
This was a great way to start the tournament and get the puck rolling!
Great win, and great team work!
U14 Game 2 - Another Battle Royale at Burnaby 8 Rinks! The 14U Northwest Selects had a brutal, grinding game with the North Shore Avalanche. After a much disputed game misconduct call took out one of the Selects for the entire game, the Avalanche were able to escape with a 1-0 win. Kaelyn Green, the Selects goalie, had another outstanding performance in net. The action was almost "tennis match" like, with the teams trading time in the others zone and pressure on the opposing goalie regularly. With another physical game and another three periods under their belt, the 14U Selects continue to grow rapidly as a team. They gave a team that plays together all the time, and came in riding a season long unbeaten streak, all it could handle. Coach Kari and Coach AJ did a great job keeping the players focused on the game and not on the officiating. Miranda Buck was named the MVP of the game. They were thrilled to see the kids rally and focus the way they did. While the Selects have their eye firmly on their 7pm Saturday game, it would be dishonest to say that there isn't hope that these two talented teams can meet again in the final. Without the game changing performance by the officials, another game between these two would be another classic.
U14 Game 3 - NW Selects 14U v. Surrey Falcons - A great one for the ladies. After some initial tight play during the first period from the Surrey team, the Selects went on to win going away with a 9-0 final tally. MVP for the game went to Emily Ellis who had a very strong weekend as a whole. This game was a real confidence builder for the team who really started to hit their stride and get a feel for each other.
U14 Game 4 - NW Selects 14U v. North Shore Winterhawks - Almost a carbon copy of Game 3. There was some good battles early on, but the Selects got rolling and pulled away. The final score was 7-0. This was a great tune up for the Championship game and rematch with the team everyone wanted to see us play, the North Shore Avalanche. MVP for the game was Saville Pickar with some electric moves and goals.
Finals - NW Selects 14U v. North Shore Avalanche - What a game! Two VERY evenly matched teams of young ladies. It was a seesaw battle between two heavy weight fighters. North Shore struck first to take a 1-0 lead. The Selects came back to grab the advantage 2-1. Not to be outdone, the Av's tallied 3 times to take what seemed to be a commanding 4-2 lead. Then came the third period rally of rallies! Midway through the 3rd, the Selects found the back of the net to close the gap. And in dramatic fashion, with only a few minutes remaining in regulation, they tied it up, sending it to a shootout. Emily Ellis took our first shot, and put it in. The Av's player did the same to tie it at 5. Jerin Dinkins took the second, and took care of business to give us the lead at 6-5. The Av's player then made a nice move, but Kaelyn (our goalie from the OC) stopped her to preserve the lead. Naomi Woolfenden took the last turn and also tallied to push the lead to 7-5. The Av's player was allowed to take their last shot, but Kaelyn shut the door for good.
NWS U14 Selects Win the Game and Tournament! Awesome!
U19 - Game 1 - Richmond is an aggressive team and one of the best in the tournament. The NWS played them tough and tied the first and third periods (0-0) ... but in the second there were several calls that went against the NWS which cost them the game (1-4). MVP was Vanessa Vargus, but everyone players well in this first game of the season.
U19 Game 2 - The second was against a team that was a good match. Watching the game it appeared the NWS were in control, but they gave up 2 on break aways and 1 off a skate, and 2 on penalties ... so could not over come the numbers. Shannon Lane was MVP of the game.
U19 Game 3 - The third game, the NWS really started to click. They played with purpose and determination. Taking an early lead they stayed resolved in this contest not to let it go and won on a series of 'crashing the nets' tactics. (3-2). Hannah Smith was called MVP, but more importantly, you could see the 'Team' starting to become one.
U19 Game 4 - The forth game was against a team that has played together for the past 4-5 years. All but 1 go to the same highschool ... but the NWS were a team now and went straight for the win. The content was very well matched and was as the score reflected one goal differentials, or ties for the entire game. The NWS came out winners (2-1). The MVP of the game was Kristine Burney who was solid in nets for the entire tournament ... as were all the NWS.
The U19s came to Burnaby to learn to play together, get their lines adjusted, develop systems and get ready for their first debut in Chicago over Thanksgiving weekend. They came as talented individuals and left as a team. Playing at the Tier I level is a challenge, but a bracket for winners!
