Wednesday, Game 1 - Connecticut Polar Bears

The NWS U19s take one from the home team (3-2)

The 1st period saw action in both ends of the ice. Swegle was strong in nets for the Selects and made several key saves as they headed into the 2nd tied (0-0). The Bears scored in the 2nd off a scramble, but the Selects came right back when Lane split the 'D' off the ensuing face off and drove the breakaway into the back of the net, making it (1-1). Then again in the 2nd, Smith came up big with a goal off a Lane assist to take the lead (2-1). Johnson added to the score off of a Charron rebound making it (3-1). But the Bears were not done and brought the game to within 1 in the middle of the 3rd. With less than a minute in regulation, the NWS took a penalty giving the Bears a 6 on 4 advantage (after pulling their net tender). But the NWS made 2 clears and that was enough to secure the win.

Thursday, Game 2 - Maine Selects

NWS Lose Close One (0-1)

Alex Hall played big. Period. But so did the entire team against one of the tournament's favorites, the Maine Selects. The NWS came out a bit slowly but picked up the pace and created multiple scoring opportunities, but the Maine net-tender was up to the task. At the other end, Hall stood on her head in several occasions to keep all but one puck out of the net. In one sequence, after losing her stick, Hall dove completely out of her crease to secure a rebound and get a whistle. Gusey nearly got lose on 2 occasions, but her speed was not quite enough to lose defenders. Maine is one of the three teams who could win the tournament ... the NWS is another!

Thursday, Game 3 - Susquehanna Rapids

Back To Their Winning Ways (3-0)

The NWS took the game by storm in tonight's contest. Aggressiveness was the theme for the game and the NWS stepped up to the challenge. Fore checking the Rapids created multiple turnovers and shots on net. The Rapids' net tender was out standing in the 1st half of the contest but Rickard finally found the net with 5.57 left in the second off of a Pitzke assist, and the NWS were on their way. Then early in the 3rd, Kirsch shot low under the pads of the Rapids' tender for a score off of a Beckstead assist. And to finish the contest, Charron picked off the back corner of net on a redirect from a Kirsch pass. McDonald and Schaefer posted good games with multiple clears at key points in the game, and both completely took the Rapid's points out of the game. Swegle was in net posting the shut-out.

Friday, Game 4 - Rhode Island Panthers

Odd Man Rush At 1:30 Left Costs NWS Game & Advancement to Semi's (1-2)

The NWS played a tough RI team who had one very skilled player and played them straight up for all but the last few seconds. But with 1:30 left in the game, the NWS gave up an odd man rush and the Panthers scored the winning goal of the contest. Scoring for the NWS was Kirsch. Defense, Miller, Pitzke, Beckstead and Murff played good defense against a team that had posted up to 9 goals in their previous games. In the last 30 seconds Smith dumped the puck down the ice, Lane took out a player (without being called for it) and deflected the puck to the corner. Pitzke pinched and took a shot with Lane as a screen but the deflection went wide and the game and tournament ended for the NWS.

The U19s went (2-2) on the weekend against some very good talent. The 2 games lost were both by a goal each. Multiple College coaches scouted the girls and communications opened with them about opportunities. About 25-30 resume packets were given directly to coaches that we talked to on behalf of players. More were picked up from the tables. The trip will help players in their quest to play college level hockey ... which is one of our missions.

Well done Selects !!!

Up Coming Events

District Selects Camp - The Pacific District Select camp dates have been announced. They are May 11 – 13, 2007 in Olympic View Ice Arena, Mountlake Terrace, WA.

The Pacific District Select Tryout consists of 4 on-ice tryout sessions and a development program including off-ice seminars. The off-ice seminars cover speed, agility and quickness training, strength training, nutrition, and accessing opportunities in NCAA college hockey and the USA Hockey National program. All sessions are tailored to the female hockey player whether playing on an all female or mixed youth teams.

Letters about the camp are being sent to all players in Oregon & Washington by their respective associations (OSHA & PNAHA). Idaho is in the Mountain District, so a different process will be followed there. The OSHA letters were mailed on November 24th. See Letter.

Oregon and Washington residents must apply with OSHA or PNAHA, who will determine who should attend the District Camp. Players will be selected based on the teams which they compete on, a recommendation by their coaches, and an essay about why they should attend. Applications are due at OSHA by December 31, 2006 ... so hurry! PNAHA should be announcing their process soon, so stay tuned for more.
