Three Bellingham girls helped push their teams to victory at the Burnaby Minor Female Remembrance Day Hockey Tournament November 11-13. Billed as North America’s largest all-female tournament, the event included 64 teams from Western Canada and the US.
Defender Delaney Pratt, 13, chalked up an assist with the Northwest Selects under-14 team as it went undefeated to a firstplace finish in the Bantam Tier 2 division. Coached by Robin Willins, the 13-and-14-year-olds scored four shutouts before a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Summerland, B.C., in the finals.
Forward Meghan Kraus, 9, had a goal and an assist as her Northwest Selects under-12 team placed second in Peewee Tier 2, coming from behind to tie the first-place team in the playoffs, only to lose to the Northshore Avalanche in a shootout. Meghan’s sister Hannah Kraus was in the net for the team, only her third time playing goal, and received the most valuable player honor for her efforts.
LYNDEN FIRSTINJVLEAGUE
The Lynden Flash eighthgrade girls AAU basketball team won the Skagit Valley junior varsity league with a 7-1 record. The league included high school JV teams from Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish counties.
Team members are: Hailey Baar, Julia Roper, Jessica Biesheuvel, Krista Groves, Amanda Tapia, Hannah Shine, Laura Webb, Krista Beck, Lacey McDowell and Emily Shumway. Coaches are Darryl Groves, Ladd Shumway and statistician Pam Biesheuvel.
FERNDALE WINS TOURNEY
The Ferndale seventh-grade boys’ AAU basketball team won its division at the Western Washington Veterans Day tournament. Ferndale beat Burlington 63-30, Lynden 43-36, Sehome 63-30 and Millcreek 48- 31 in the championship game.
Team members are Garrit Stiglitz, Conor Ford, Nathan Gwaltney, Chad Hunt, Cody Mason, Kyle Prather, Jake Frost, Alec Pennylegion, Jake Schroeder and Watson George.
NOOKDEN TOPS AT MUKILTEO
The Nookden soccer team finished 4-0 at the Mukilteo Turkey Shoot over the weekend. The girls’ under-10/11 combined team competed in the girls’ under-11/12 division and defeated the North Bend Bruisers 4-1 in the championship game. Nookden outscored its opponents 19-2 in the tournament.
The team is made up of players from Nooksack and Lynden who play through Lynden Action Sports. Team members are: Peyton Linville, Tarynn Haan, Mariah Perry, Megan Perry, Morgan Perry, Tori VandeHoef, Brianna Prink, Emily Sytsma, Janis DeJaeger, Jill DeJaeger, Alyssa Olsen, Devon Kollmyer, Courtney Hollander and Madeline Zulehlke. Coaches are Michael Linville and John Perry.
