Burnaby CANLAN Tournament - 11/10/2006
Saturday (Day1) Teams Go 5 Wins 1 Loss
In their season openers at the Canlan tournament at Burnaby 8 Rinks, the NWS posts an impressive 5-1 start the the weekend. The U12s hit the ice in their new 'baby blue' jerseys and stole the show as the skated, passed, shot their way to 2 commanding wins. Likewise the U14s posted two run-away wins at the Bantam level. The U19s lost their first, but came from behind to win their second, playing with only 1 hour rest between the games. Sunday holds a 4 game schedule with the U12s playing 2 and the U14s & U19s playing 1 each. Stay tuned for updates!
Sunday (Day 2) Teams Advance to Finals
All three teams play inspired hockey on Sunday to finish out the round robin portion of tournament play. The U12s played twice, losing their first contest 1-2, but then coming back strong in the semi-finals winning 6-3. They now advance to the final game on Monday. The U14s controlled the play of their only game of the day winning big and advancing to the semi-finals on Monday Morning. The U19s played an incredible game which went 0-0 well into the middle of the third when they gave up the only goal of the day, losing 0-1. The U19s move on to play their last game on Monday which will put them in 5th out of 8 teams. (U19s are playing at the Tier I level which is the highest level of play in Canada).
Monday (Day3) All Teams Are Winners
Each of the NWS teams were winners on the day.
The U19s played first winning their game in a nail biter (1-0). Alex's goalie stick received the MVP as she had dropped it in the crease during a scramble right when a puck was headed to the net ... the stick knob made the save. (Alex was seen kissing her stick multiple times for getting her the shut-out win). The U19s went 2 wins and 2 losses on the weekend - in the Tier I bracket, that is outstanding. The U19s also win as they were working hard on developing lines and strategies for their trip to Minnesota in 2 weeks.

The U14s Win It All
Going down by 1 in the championship game and being plagued with a series of penalties, the U14s showed grit by coming back strong with 2 goals to win the game (2-1) and championship at the Bantam level.
The U14s played extremely well on the weekend and were one of two teams to beat at the tournament. This is the teams first tournament win, and second association win in 2 years. |
The U12s take second in shoot-up. There was no doubt that the U12s were the cutest team in the tournament, but they also showed that they can play hockey with the best. The U12s went 4-2 on the weekend. In the championship game it came down to a final shoot-out which did not go the U12s direction, but the inspired play and the support that the U14s gave the U12s was an inspiration to everyone! The U12s were awesome!
Special thanks to everyone that made this weekend a success. Our Coaches, our administrative support staff, our parents ... everyone was absolutely incredible! There were so many things going on behind the scenes and so many people stepping up to help that the weekend came off with very little stress for the kids. Thank you all, you are great!
