NW Selects Hold First of Three Summer Camps

The NW Selects Female Hockey Organization held the first of three summer camps this weekend in Kent, WA.  The camp was held at the Kent Valley Ice Arena in Kent, WA. on Saturday and Sunday July 19th and 20th.

Approximately 20 girls attended the camp ranging in age from 11 to 17 years old.  The camp was directed by Coach Teka Parks who is the NW Selects U19 Head Coach and she was assisted by Aili Gusey, a former NW Selects player. The coaches focused the girls on the fundamentals of skating and stick handling throughout the weekend. On Saturday the girls were on the ice from 4:15pm until 8:15pm and learned and relearned and made sure their muscles were going to remember how to use all the edges of their blades skating both forwards and backwards. In addition, the girls were introduced to over speed concepts and control.  Prior to taking the ice the girls had a 45 minute dry land and conditioning workout followed by a presentation by Coach Parks on expectations – hers as a coach and the players for the weekend, the season and beyond.

Sunday saw a number of tired eyes and tired legs enter the Kent Valley Ice Centre for a 7:30am dry land and conditioning hour with the Kent Physical Therapy and Sports Performance Centre owner Bob Hamre.  Following the session the girls were back on the ice for another four hours of focused fundamentals of skating.  By the end of the day there were many sore feet, tired legs but gigantic smiles from all the camp

participants. For some of the girls it was their very first time at an all girl’s camp and the experience was better than expected.

The NW Selects will be having two additional camps during the month of August, one in Vancouver, WA. and the other in Portland, OR area. Please visit the NW Selects website for more information as well as registration opportunities for the camps and tryouts, which will be held in September.
